English Stoneware

During the early 19th C the race was on in England to produce porcelain fine enough to rival the Chinese. Experiments resulted in a range of types of pottery including stoneware, which was produced by several factories including William Turner and Josiah Spode

Ironstone

Ironstone is a type of stoneware patented in 1813 by Charles Mason in Staffordshire as a cheap alternative to porcelain. Characteristically it is white, very strong and may be slightly transparent. May also be referred to as Semi-porcelain, English porcelain, stone china or opaque porcelain.
