The Symbolism of Jewellery
In sentimental Victorian England, jewellery had a hidden language all of its own. Flowers and creatures all carried their own meaning as did the stones themselves.

The meaning of creatures
Serpent = eternal love
Bee = Be sure of my love
Flower symbolism
Lily of the valley = the return of happiness
Ivy = fidelity & marriage
Red rosebuds = youth and beauty
Anemones = truth and sincerity
Azaleas = take care of yourself
Buttercups = cheerfulness
White carnations = sweet and lovely
Yellow rose = friendship only!
Meanings of precious stones
Emeralds = hope
Diamonds = eternal love

Secret Messages
Some Victorian items of jewellery had hidden meanings within the stones they contain.
The first letter of each stone spells out a message.
Two messages frequently found are:
REGARD Ruby Emerald Garnet Amethyst Ruby Diamond
DEAREST: Diamond Emerald Amethyst, Ruby, Emerald Sapphire & Topaz
"Mizpah" is often seen spelled out on silver broches, it means sweet sorrow and was worn by those separated from their loved ones ( e.g. by war)
Cabochon stones are uncut but polished with a rounded surface & flat back
