The Symbolism of Jewellery

In sentimental Victorian England, jewellery had a hidden language all of its own. Flowers and creatures all carried their own meaning as did the stones themselves.

Below are just a few, please email us with additional symbols associated with jewellery

The meaning of creatures

Serpent = eternal love

Bee = Be sure of my love

Flower symbolism

Lily of the valley =  the return of happiness

Ivy = fidelity & marriage

Red rosebuds =  youth and beauty

Anemones = truth and sincerity

Azaleas = take care of yourself

Buttercups = cheerfulness

White carnations = sweet and lovely

Yellow rose = friendship only!

Meanings of precious stones

Emeralds = hope

Diamonds = eternal love

Rubies = passion

Turquoise = true love

Secret Messages
Some Victorian items of jewellery had hidden meanings within the stones they contain.
The first letter of each stone spells out a message.
Two messages frequently found are:
REGARD  Ruby Emerald Garnet Amethyst Ruby Diamond

DEAREST:  Diamond Emerald Amethyst, Ruby, Emerald Sapphire & Topaz

"Mizpah" is often seen spelled out on silver broches, it means sweet sorrow and was worn by those separated from their loved ones ( e.g. by war)

Cabochon stones are uncut but polished with a rounded surface & flat back
